Councilor Dan Champine Commits to Strengthening Accountability Measures Following Veto Override Vote
Council Vice President encourages conversation to clearly define the roles of the offices the City Attorney and City Clerk.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque City Council Vice President Dan Champine issued the following statement after the Council was unable to override the Mayor’s veto of legislation concerning the offices of the City Attorney and City Clerk:
“While I am disappointed that the veto override did not succeed, I remain encouraged by the important conversation this effort has advanced. The Council’s consideration of this legislation reflects a shared commitment to transparent, accountable, and effective city government.
“This is not the end of the work—it is an opportunity to move forward thoughtfully. I look forward to working with my fellow Councilors, the Administration, and legal experts to develop an improved proposal that clearly defines roles, protects the integrity of these essential offices, and ensures meaningful accountability to both City government and the residents we serve.
“Our responsibility is to build a government that earns and maintains the public’s trust. I remain committed to pursuing a balanced, legally sound solution that serves Albuquerque well.”
