ABQ BioPark Job Opportunity: Assistant Aquarium Technician

The ABQ BioPark’s Aquarium team is seeking a motivated, helpful and detail-oriented team member to serve as an Assistant Aquarium Technician at the ABQ BioPark.

The successful candidate will have a passion for aquatic life and be interested in providing the highest quality animal care at the Aquarium.  A strong desire to learn, be self-motivated, and to work in a team environment is paramount. This position reports to the Assistant Curator of Fishes and is part of the Animal Care department. 

The ABQ BioPark consists of the Zoo, Aquarium and Botanic Garden and Tingley Beach.

This position is employed through a temporary staffing agency, not the City of Albuquerque, and is located at the ABQ BioPark. This full-time position is limited to a two-year term.

Assistant Aquarium Technician’s duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Receive general instruction from assigned area leads and supervisory staff
  • Assist in maintaining and caring for a variety of marine and aquatic species within the ABQ BioPark  
  • Observe animals in assigned areas of responsibility, report any signs of illness or injury 
  • Prepare raw food diets for animals
  • Maintain diet prep work area. Clean tools and equipment. Label food containers.
  • Assist in feeding a variety of marine and aquatic animals. Complete feeding records
  • Assist in maintaining exhibit water quality via multiple methods such a water changes
  • Monitor and report issues in exhibit life support systems and its components. 
  • Clean exhibits by scrubbing algae and siphoning substrates
  • Clean and maintain work areas behind the scenes
  • Provide enrichment to animals as directed
  • Assist in the upkeep of daily records including: behavior, diet, system maintenance, medical treatments, mortality or other observations 
  • Assist supervisory staff and higher-level Aquarists 
  • Respond to public inquiries in a professional manner; forward complaints to supervisor for resolution
  • Coverage as needed
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required
  • Possibility of cleaning and maintaining exhibits by SCUBA

A Successful Assistant Aquarium Technician will:

  • Be passionate for marine life and providing quality animal care

  • Be proficient in communication 
  • Be comfortable working alone and in a team environment
  • May have experience with aquaculture or aquarium maintenance

Qualifications

Applicants must be 18 years or older, have a High School diploma or GED, and have basic computer proficiency. Physically able to lift or move up to 50 pounds. Comfortable working in and around water, in a combination of indoor and outdoor environments, on slippery or uneven surfaces, and may involve exposure to chemicals, noise, dust, heat, cold and/or inclement weather conditions. Physical requirements include the ability to sit, stand, bend, kneel, push, pull, read, write and speak English

Candidates must pass a security background check to be hired. 

Work schedule: 

Full-time; Position requires weekend and holiday work. Shifts are from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. with a 1-hour lunch and two 20-minute breaks.

Pay rate: 

$16.03 per hour. This position is employed through a temporary staffing agency, not the City of Albuquerque.
