ABQ BioPark Job Opportunity: Assistant Aquarium Technician

Job Duties

  • Maintain and care for a variety of fish within the assigned area
  • Clean and maintain aquariums, prepare diets, and feed fish according to established guidelines
  • Maintain accurate records on animals and water quality
  • Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Education directly related to the minimum requirements below may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis. High school diploma or GED; and two years of experience in any combination of the following areas:

  • Marine biology
  • Aquatic animal husbandry
  • Aquaculture

Experience working in an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited facility preferred.

Additional Requirements

May require a valid New Mexico Driver's license and city operators permit (COP). Possession of an appropriate valid SCUBA diving certification within six months from date of hire.

Preferred Knowledge

  • Basic procedures of an aquarium or hatchery program
  • Principles and practices of SCUBA diving
  • Operations, services and activities of a biological park program
  • Safe work practices when working with fish and other animals
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices

Preferred Skills and Abilities

  • Maintaining and caring for a variety of animals within the assigned area
  • Cleaning and maintaining aquarium exhibits
  • Preparing diets and feeding fish
  • Learning fish catching handling methods
  • Communicating clearly and concisely
  • Maintaining accurate records
  • Developing excellent observational skills
  • Performing the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

Working Conditions

Environmental: Aquatic indoor, outdoor and underwater environments

Position involves a mix between an office and the displays and exhibits that they manage.

  • Work in an animal environment including a variety of domestic, exotic, aquatic animals and animal waste
  • Work in or with water
  • Work on slippery or uneven surfaces
  • Exposure to chemicals and pesticides, noise, dust, heat, cold and inclement weather conditions


  • SCUBA diving essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, talking, manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination
  • Occasional heavy, moderate, or light lifting
  • Office environment with standard equipment and tasks working at a computer/video display terminal and desk occasionally

Pay rate

The pay rate is $13.48 with ATA Services (SCUBA CERTIFIED)
