Second Saturday: The Art of Conservation

Description

In 2025, former Casa San Ysidro Guide Mary Kay Stein donated an 1890s tin nicho originally from the mercantile opened by Richard Heller in Cabezon in 1889. Her family received the nicho as a gift in the early 1950s from Elroy and Emma Griego, Heller’s daughter.

Before it can be displayed at Casa San Ysidro, the nicho needs conservation. Award-winning fifth-generation tinwork artist Jason Younis y Delgado will restore this historic piece. Taught tinsmithing by his grandmother and great-uncle, Jason continues the tradition through teaching, demonstrations, and local art shows.
