Proposed Burton Dog Park Will Not Be Constructed

Public feedback helped inform City's decision

Following a public engagement process with residents living near Burton Park, the City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department will not move forward with plans to construct a dog park.

A total of 44 comments were received via email, the City’s 311 service, phone calls, and comment cards from the public meeting. About 75% of these comments opposed the concept, raising various issues. In addition, a petition opposing the project with 108 signatures was submitted to the Department. Based on this public feedback as well as the additional costs to mitigate some of the concerns, the Department has decided not to move forward with the project. The Department will continue to evaluate opportunities to provide an off-leash dog park for this area of the city. In the meantime, the Department encourages dog owners to utilize any of the Albuquerque’s 13 dog parks, including Kirtland and USS Bullhead Memorial dog parks, which are the closest to the Ridgecrest/South Nob Hill neighborhoods.
