Site Description

The closed private Schwartzman landfill is located on both sides of I-25 between Gibson and Sunport Boulevards within four distinct areas.  The site was historically a gravel quarry and shooting range that was filled with construction and demolition waste along with some municipal waste following the construction of I-25 near 1967.  Indiscriminant dumping predominantly occurred between 1973 and 2002.  The original acreage of the landfill covered approximately 78 acres.  Development in and around the landfill has occurred over time and approximately 30 acres in the southeast quadrant have been excavated. Waste thickness is unknown but believed to range from 5-30 feet with varying cover thickness.

The buffer zone is established at 1,000 feet.  Building projects and development projects located within the buffer zone are reviewed by the City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department for landfill gas impacts.

Current Status

  • New developments must follow Environmental Services Division's guidelines within buffer zones
