What is a City Councilor?

The City Council is the legislative body that governs the City of Albuquerque. The council generally functions as a parliamentary or congressional style legislative body, proposing bills, and passing laws to help govern the city. The Council is comprised of 9 Councilors who are elected on staggered terms every 4 years. The Councilors get paid 1/9th of the Mayor's salary, so each Councilor also balances a full time job in addition to their duties as a Councilor. Biography

City Councilor Dan Lewis represents District 5, the Northwest part of Albuquerque. He was elected to City Council in October 2009.

As Councilor, Dan Lewis is promoting job development on the West Side of Albuquerque, developing safer neighborhoods through community awareness and service, establishing healthier neighborhoods through the development of athletic fields and parks, and responding to District 5 constituents. Legislation

Councilor Lewis has introduced legislation to improve the transportation system on the West Side, including but not limited to: the Paseo del Norte and I-25 interchange, Unser Boulevard, and the Northwest Education Corridor. He has worked hard to remove bad policies that hinder the growth and success of small businesses and he has applauded the efforts of Kirtland Air Force Base, Metro Teen Court and WESST. Budget Highlights

The City of Albuquerque is required by state law to adopt a balanced budget. Councilor Lewis has been influential in reducing the recurring cost of government without raising taxes or fees, and without mass layoffs.

Councilor Lewis has also worked to fund economic development, infrastructure, and recreation improvements for residents in District 5.
