This dedication brought together members of the García family, South Valley residents, veterans, and community leader to celebrate García’s contributions to Albuquerque and the State of New Mexico.

Born and raised in Las Vegas, NM, García served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era, where he earned several military decorations including the Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. After his military service, García settled in Albuquerque’s South Valley and became a committed civic leader.

He served two terms in the New Mexico House of Representatives, representing District 12, and sponsored legislation supporting children’s services, health care, senior services, and fair housing. García also held key leadership roles in the New Mexico Department of Military Affairs, advocating for service members and their families across the state.

Throughout his life, García was widely admired as a compassionate, principled, and community-driven leader. His impact extended far behind policy. He was known for listening, showing up, and ensuring people felt seen and heard.

The renamed pavilion is part of the City’s Stories of Us initiative, which honors individuals whose lives and legacies reflect Albuquerque’s diverse history and shared values.

“Delano García devoted his life to service,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Naming this pavilion in his honor ensures that his story becomes part of the landscape where families gather and neighbors connect.”
