Charles “Chuck” Malagodi

Esperanza means “hope.” Chuck's dedication to the Esperanza Community Bike Shop and the spirit of hope he shared with youth in the community will be his lasting legacy.

Charles “Chuck” Malagodi passed tragically on January 19th 2025, aged sixty-four, from injuries he suffered in a hit-and-run while cycling home from his volunteer work at Free Bikes 4 Kidz New Mexico.

Chuck dedicated his life to making Albuquerque a better place through nearly 25 years of service working for the City of Albuquerque's Parks and Recreation Department, managing its Bicycle Safety and Outdoor Education Programs.

As a League of American Bicyclists Instructor, Chuck taught more than 10,000 young people how to cycle safely.

Chuck's legacy will live on through his key role in the establishment of the Esperanza Community Bike Shops, now known as the Malagodi Esperanza Bicycle Shop and the McKinley Bicycle Shop respectively. He was also instrumental to bringing the Safe Routes to School Program and other outdoor safety programs to Albuquerque.

After his retirement, Chuck served as a board member and project coordinator for Free Bikes 4 Kidz New Mexico, a Youth Minister, as an Usher at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, and a member of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, helping those in need.

Chuck's passions included bicycling, camping, outdoor recreation of all kinds, and sharing his knowledge with others, young and old.
What Chuck wanted most was to leave the world a better place. He donated his time, money and energy to ensure that the next generation will inherit a world they will love and enjoy.

Esperanza means “hope.” Chuck's dedication to the Esperanza Community Bike Shop and the spirit of hope he shared with youth in the community will be his lasting legacy.
