Moving Day – Is Your Pet Info Up to Date?

Animal Welfare Department aims to return lost pets quickly and safely

September 02, 2025

ALBUQUERQUE — Animal Welfare Department (AWD) wants a safe return for any pet that gets lost. But without identification, pets will not easily find their way home. Moving is a major life event, and if you’re a pet owner, it affects more than just you. Preparation is key, especially when pets are involved.

Moving means new contact details, so make sure to keep your pet’s ID tag and microchip current. A quick update ensures that if your pet happens to wander or get lost, it can easily be found and safely returned.

“Knowing that your pet's information is correct provides peace of mind, especially during a stressful time like moving,” said Animal Welfare Department Director Carolyn Ortega. “It’s the most important step to protecting your pets.

AWD provides year-round free service to update pet microchips and tags. You must be at least 18 years old with a valid ID to microchip your pets. The microchip will be registered to the ID holder. Information you provide at the time of microchipping will help locate you if the animal is ever lost or recovered. No appointment is needed, and it only takes five minutes to check your pet’s microchip status — or get a microchip. It’s a tiny step that can make a big difference.

“Having the combination of microchip and ID tag is the best solution for keeping your pet safe if they become lost,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “If you haven’t already done so, take care of these simple tasks today to prevent the tragedy of not reuniting with your pet.”

Losing track of your family companion is a worry nobody wants during a busy move.
