Lucky Paws Takes Adoptions on the Road
ALBUQUERQUE — Albuquerque families across the city will have more chances to find their next pet at events across the city with the newly reimagined Lucky Paws Adoption Program. The Animal Welfare Department (AWD) announced today that the Lucky Paws Adoption Center is “going mobile” and partnering with local businesses and organizations to host adoption events. The Lucky Paws Adoption Center, currently located at Coronado Mall, will close on Saturday, December 7.
While having an offsite adoption center in a shopping mall was effective many years, shelters around the country have had greater success connecting adoptable pets to families with mobile pet adoption events. With rising costs, the current location is no longer feasible. The City welcomes input for a brick-and-mortar Lucky Paws Adoption Center in the future. If you're pet-loving business owner or community organization looking to make a "pawsitive" impact by hosting an adoption event, emailing [email protected] for more information!
“We’re very excited that the Lucky Paws brand will live on in an innovative way by partnering with more local businesses to host mobile pet adoption events,” said Carolyn Ortega, Director of Animal Welfare Department, “We know that pets blossom and show their true personality once they get out of the kennel environment. By getting more pets out into neighborhoods throughout Albuquerque, we will reach more of the community and give our adoptable pets a much-needed break from the shelter.”
“More families throughout Albuquerque will be reached by taking Lucky Paws out to the neighborhoods where people are, and that means more forever homes for pets,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Future pet owners can now meet adoptable pets at the parks, businesses, and events they already go to all across our city.”
AWD is increasing the number of adoption counselors at the Eastside and Westside shelters to enhance customer service and create a welcoming, positive experience for prospective adopters. Trained adoption counselors will be able to provide shared insights about the pet you’re interested in to help you find the perfect match.
The department encourages families to visit AWD shelters and to choose any one of the hundreds of loving pets who are ready for a family. The adoption fee is waived for all pets. Each adoption will include spay or neuter, vaccinations, a custom pet tag and a microchip. When you adopt a dog, you will receive one day of free basic dog training.
