Howl-a-Day of the Dog Pet Parade and Costume Contest
Hit the Rail Trail with the Animal Welfare Department
ALBUQUERQUE — Howl-a-Day of the Dog pet parade and costume contest is on its way to the Albuquerque Rail Trail. This fun, family-friendly event hosted by the Animal Welfare Department (AWD) invites dogs and their people to dress up and compete for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes while highlighting the joy pets bring to our lives.
"Albuquerque loves its pets, and events like Howl-a-Day of the Dog connect us through the special bond we have with our furry friends,” said Mayor Tim Keller.
"This parade is more than just a costume contest,” said AWD Director Carolyn Ortega. “It's a celebration of the unconditional love our pets give us. We invite the whole community to join us for a day of fun and connection on the Rail Trail."
Event Highlights:
• When: Saturday, November 1, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
• Where: Albuquerque Rail Trail at 1904 Bellamah Ave. NW, Sawmill District.
• On-Site Registration: Opens at 10:30 a.m. for the costume contest.
• Cost: Free and open to the public.
The parade starts by the Rail Trail steel arch in the Sawmill District on Bellamah and concludes at Tiguex Park. Leading the way will be the Mariachi Herencia, Atrisco Heritage Academy High School, setting a festive tone. The beloved Orbit mascot and local vendors will also add to the fun.
Participants are encouraged to dress their dogs in costumes, whether Halloween-themed, honoring Día de los Muertos, or just plain hilarious. The parade is also a way to remember beloved pets who have passed, reflecting on the delight they brought to our lives. So, attendees may bring a small item such as a photo, collar, or keepsake to place at the remembrance table.
“We just opened this first stretch of the Rail Trail, and it’s already doing what it was designed for: bringing people together,” said Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency Director Terry Brunner. “It’s great to see that spirit through events like Howl-a-Day of the Dog, which make the trail feel alive and welcoming.”
The Rail Trail offers a perfect backdrop for this friendly contest – a spacious, multiuse path that allows people and critters to safely explore Albuquerque’s urban core.
