Crafters and DIYers: Help Shelter Pets From the Comfort of Home
Join the Animal Welfare Department movement to enrich shelter pets’ lives
The City of Albuquerque’s Animal Welfare Department (AWD) is calling on all crafters, DIYers, and pet lovers to put their creativity to work in support of shelter animals. Whether you're an experienced maker or just starting out, the new “Crafters and DIYers” program offers a heartwarming opportunity to improve the lives of pets in need, right from your own home.
Participants are encouraged to create handmade items such as cozy blankets, snuffle mats, tug-of-war ropes, and catnip toys to provide comfort, enrichment, and stimulation to pets currently residing in the City's shelters. These thoughtful donations can help reduce stress, bring joy, and even improve adoption chances.
Not sure where to start? AWD has simple project guides provided by Comfort for Critters on our website to help you every step of the way!
“This program is a great way for crafty folks to make a real impact,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Even a simple blanket or toy can make a huge difference to a shelter pet.”
Whether you work solo or gather your crafting group for a creative session, the options are endless. All experience levels are welcome. Those interested in participating or needing more information can email [email protected]. AWD staff will then have you complete an online application to become part of our volunteer team.
“This initiative is more than just crafts,” said AWD Director Carolyn Ortega. “It’s about community, compassion, and creative problem-solving. We’ve seen how a small handmade treasure can delight a shelter pet and help them feel loved while waiting for their forever home.”
Together, we can craft a better life for Albuquerque’s shelter pets
