AWD League of Volunteers Fair on September 26
Learn about volunteer opportunities at the CABQ Animal Welfare Department.
The City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department (AWD) is searching for everyday heroes to support local shelter pets. Community members are invited to attend the League of Volunteers Fair on Saturday, September 26, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Eastside Shelter, located at 8920 Lomas NE.
Dedicated volunteers with big hearts are behind-the-scenes superheroes at AWD. The League of Volunteers Fair is your chance to join their ranks and discover how you can help animals in need. Whether you're a cat cuddler, dog walker, photographer, or just love animals, there’s a place for you in the AWD League of Volunteers.
“Our city’s shelter pets receive outstanding care thanks to our dedicated volunteers," said Mayor Tim Keller. "By volunteering, you can enrich the lives of shelter animals while becoming part of the team that cares for them."
Event highlights include:
- Animal meet-and-greets – Get to know some of the pets you could help
- Facility tours – Get a behind-the-scenes look at how the shelter operates
- Info booths – Discover different volunteer positions that match your skills and schedule
- On-Site Application Support – Complete your volunteer sign-up on the spot with guided AWD staff assistance
“Everyday heroes make our work possible,” said Animal Welfare Department Director Carolyn Ortega. “Whether you can give a few hours or a few days a month, your time directly transforms life at the shelter for the animals who need us most.”
Volunteers must be 18 year or older and commit to at least six hours a month. Training is provided, and scheduling is flexible. Volunteers assist with everything from walking and socializing animals to supporting adoption events and helping in the clinic.
