The City of Albuquerque’s Office of Military and Veterans Affairs, the Parks and Recreation Department and the Navy League of the United States, New Mexico Council are working in collaboration to bring the sail of the USS Albuquerque home.

The USS Albuquerque is a Los Angeles-class nuclear submarine that was commissioned in 1983 and given the hull number SSN-706 in recognition of the 1706 founding of the city of Albuquerque. Decommissioned in 2017, after more than 30 years of service, and the submarine is currently at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard where it is currently being dismantled. We have an opportunity to preserve a portion of the USS Albuquerque, when the US Navy removes the 52-ton sail, it will be transported to the city where it will serve as a visible and poignant memorial.

Albuquerque residents can learn more, provide input on the future site of the USS Albuquerque, and sign up for updates at ussalbuquerque.org.
