Hazards of Adventure:
As with all sports, adventure sports have risks and hazards. Remember: In adventure sports you can do everything right and still get injured. All attempts to minimize the inherent hazards associated with adventure sports are made through staff training and education, as well as diligent attention to safety rules during the adventures.

A “normal” caving trip requires hiking, scrambling over boulders and rocks, crawling, squeezing through constrictions, climbing, skirting pits and canyons, and walking on loose rock and slippery mud. Wild caves are totally dark. Cave floors, walls, and ceiling contain loose rock which may fall. Caves contain extensive, complex, confusing, mazelike, and restrictive passages. All cavers must pay attention to the route through the cave and stay with the group.

Harmful organisms and animals – mammals, reptiles, and insects – and bad air may be present. Caving involves extreme and abnormal physical and psychological stresses. Cavers will be exposed to extremes of wet and dry conditions. Temperature in New Mexico caves run from 40° - 65°F. Cave rescue is difficult and expensive, and the cost of the rescue may be borne by the rescued individual; therefore, it is very important that participants follow all directions from staff.

Your participation in this program indicates your assumption of the risk of serious injury or death as a result of the risks associated with caving. Participation in this program is an acknowledgement of your responsibility for your own safety.

Personal Equipment that participant must supply:

In order to prevent the spread of White Nose Syndrome, clothing and personal gear should be properly decontaminated if ever worn into a cave. Please do not bring clothing or gear worn in a cave outside New Mexico. A Caving Decontamination info sheet will be sent out with registration receipt. If you need assistance with decontamination, Outdoor Adventure can assist with decontamination prior to the event.
