Safer Crossing for the New School Year
New light to slow traffic near Zia Elementary
ALBUQUERQUE - The Department of Municipal Development (DMD) finished installing a new rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB) at the intersection of Washington and Roma near Zia Elementary School.
The beacon flashes once a pedestrian pushes a nearby button, alerting drivers that people will be using the crosswalk. A new ADA curb ramp was also added on both sides of the intersection.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, RRFBs can reduce pedestrian crashes by up to 47%.
“This will make it safer for our students and teachers, especially as we start the new school year next week, and for anyone in the neighborhood,” says DMD Director Jennifer Turner.
This updated crossing is another way the city is working to keep the public safe, in tandem with the city’s Stop for Everyone campaign. The campaign educates drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians on Albuquerque’s new traffic laws and protects our most vulnerable road users.
