Stop For Everyone

Learn how Albuquerque’s traffic laws help keep everyone safe on our streets. We’ll keep updating this page as the campaign develops and new resources become available.

Stop For Everyone. It’s the Law.

Drivers. Cyclists. Pedestrians. Wheelchair users. Everyone.

If someone is in a crosswalk — stop.

Responsibility is shared by all road users. Everyone deserves to cross the street safely.

Vision Zero and Updated Traffic Laws

Albuquerque is committed to safer streets for everyone. Through the City’s Vision Zero initiative, Albuquerque is working to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2040.

The updated traffic ordinance helps support that goal by strengthening protections for people who walk, bike, and roll. These changes modernize Albuquerque’s traffic code and help ensure our streets are safer for all road users. The Stop for Everyone campaign helps explain these rules and reminds all road users that safety is a shared responsibility.

If you would like to learn more about the legislation behind these updates, you can review the full documents below:

  • Traffic Safety Ordinance (O-2025-032) – Updates Albuquerque’s traffic code to improve protections for pedestrians, bicyclists, and other vulnerable road users.

  • City Council Resolution (R-25-196) – Directs education, enforcement planning, and additional actions to support the new safety laws.

Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs): Be Seen. Be Safe.

VRU = Vulnerable Road User

A vulnerable road user is someone on the road who does not have the protection of a vehicle and is more likely to be hurt in a crash.

VRUs Include:

  • Pedestrians
  • Wheelchair users
  • People with strollers
  • Cyclists
  • Scooter riders

Everyone deserves safe streets.

Every Corner Is a Crosswalk

Not all crosswalks look the same, but they all count.

Crosswalks May Be:

  • Marked or unmarked
  • Striped or unstriped
  • Signed or unsigned
  • Painted or unpainted

Every corner is a crosswalk. Painted or not, drivers must stop.

Drivers: Stop. It’s the Law.

See someone crossing? Stop.

Braking only takes a second. Ending a life lasts forever.

Bicycles, walkers, joggers, wheelchair users, people with strollers, everyone has the right to cross safely, and drivers must yield. Roads are public spaces, just like parks.

Don’t drive through a crosswalk when people are crossing.

Remember:

  • Pay attention
  • Stop well back so others can see and stop
  • Never pass a stopped car at a crosswalk
  • Turning right? Yield to the bike lane.
  • Turning left or right? Yield to people in the crosswalk.
Every corner is a crosswalk. Stop for people crossing.

People Crossing: Be Safe. Be Seen.

Safety is a two-way street. Cross safely.

  • Use crosswalks when available
  • Obey signal
  • Look left, right, then left again
  • Be visible, wear bright or reflective clothing
  • Stay alert to traffic around you
  • Be predictable in your behaviors
  • Make eye contact with drivers
