City to Resume Clean and Green Retail Ordinance Enforcement August 1

Ordinance curbs the use of single use plastic bags in retail settings

May 26, 2021

The pandemic challenged everyone to rethink hygiene and the safety of commonly touched items and surfaces, leading to suspension of enforcement of the Clean and Green Retail Ordinance, which curbs the use of single use plastic bags in retail settings. The change was made to protect front-line employees and customers. In light of New Mexico’s improving public health outlook and moving forward to full reopening with sustainable best practices, the Environmental Health Department will resume enforcement effective August 1, 2021.

“We took the necessary steps in times of uncertainty to protect folks during the pandemic,” said Dr. Mark DiMenna, Deputy Director of the Environmental Health Department.  “With the strides we are making to return to a full re-opening, it’s important that we get back to sustainable best practices.”
