City Council Committee Unanimously Advances Memorial Supporting Public Lands
Council measure underscores the value of Albuquerque’s cultural heritage and historic lands.
Albuquerque, NM — September 26, 2025 - Just in time for National Public Lands Day (September 27, 2025), the Albuquerque City Council’s Land Use, Planning, and Zoning Committee (LUPZ) voted unanimously to advance M-25-5, a memorial which expresses the Council’s strong support for continued federal stewardship of public lands in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County. The memorial highlights the importance of preserving iconic spaces like the Sandia Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest and Petroglyph National Monument.
“National Public Lands Day is the perfect moment to reaffirm our commitment to protecting the beautiful and historic lands that make Albuquerque such a special place to live,” said LUPZ Committee Chair Tammy Fiebelkorn. “These public spaces provide recreation, preserve cultural heritage, and support our local economy. I’m proud to see unanimous support for protecting these shared treasures for generations to come.”
The memorial underscores the environmental, cultural, and economic value of public lands, which contribute over $3 billion annually to New Mexico’s economy through outdoor recreation and support nearly 30,000 jobs statewide.
Memorial M-25-5 will now move to the full City Council for consideration on October 6, 2025.
