LOCATION/CONTEXT: The Public Art Program seeks to purchase or commission a work of art to be located outdoors within the public right-of-way at a traffic roundabout at the intersection of Tierra Pintada Blvd and Mirehaven Parkway located in District 1, Councilor Louie Sanchez.  The sculpture will become part of the permanent collection of the Albuquerque Public Art Collection.

PROJECT INTENT/THEME: The committee seeks a work, or works, of 3-dimensional art that is suitable for installation in the roundabout. The Art Selection Committee is interested in sculptural artworks  (existing ready to install or a proposal to fabricate one) that can serve as a landmark while also serving local residents with a beautiful, relevant design.

SITE: The site for this project is the planned sculpture area within the roundabout circle next to the recently established landscaping with bicycle and pedestrian improvements. The sculpture should be at least 10’ tall but not to exceed 40’. The proposed sculpture should be able to be placed on its own sculpture pad not to exceed the dimensions of the available area within roundabout circle.

MEDIA/STYLE: Submissions of sculpture should be in stone or metal or other outdoor materials and shall be easily maintained. Works should respectively represent the diverse spectrum of beliefs, cultural heritage, traditions, and artistic expression in New Mexico while also exercising cultural sensitivity to symbols and images. Additionally, artists are encouraged to avoid imagery that may have a negative connotation for some culture groups. For example, imagery of snakes and owls should be avoided. A variety of imagery and artistic styles will be considered. However, the use of images sacred to indigenous cultures should be utilized in an authentic or respectful manner and the artist should be able to speak to their choice of incorporating such imagery. Indigenous artists are highly encouraged to apply in keeping with Public Art efforts for proper representation of Indigenous cultures in respectful manners.

PROJECT FUNDS: Up to $50,000 is available to purchase or to commission an artwork or multiple artworks for the site. The all-inclusive project budget includes complete purchase of an existing sculpture or sculptures, or the complete fabrication of a proposed sculpture as well as the transportation and installation of the artwork(s) engineer designed artwork to be placed on COA provided foundation.

APPLICATION/SELECTION PROCESS: This is an open competition for all artists residing in New Mexico. Proof of residency may be required.  Indigenous artists are highly encourage to apply. The Art Selection Committee will jury and recommend selections to the full Arts Board.

Artists must submit the following items for the project:

  1. A statement or description of the proposed or existing sculptural work(s), which includes a description of the artwork. Not to exceed 500 words.
  2. A current resume including statements regarding your artwork/art education and past work, etc. Not to exceed 500 words.
  3. Artists may submit up to two (2) artwork sculpture submissions for consideration. The submissions may include an existing sculpture ready for purchase and installation or a proposal to fabricate one or more sculptures, or a combination of both.
  4. Up to 5 images of other works of art demonstrating the artist’s style and ability to fabricate and install large scale outdoor public sculpture.
  5. An image key, clearly labeled with your full name and a numerical listing for each image, the title of the work, the media, dimensions, and year of completion and purchase cost of the work.

The City of Albuquerque Public Art Urban Enhancement Division is conducting this application and selection process via Wufoo at coacommunityevents.wufoo.com/forms/call-for-artists-tierra-pintada-roundabout. This online process requires that all application images and materials be submitted in digital format. 

ELIGIBILITY: Legal residents of New Mexico are eligible to submit. (Indigenous artist are highly encouraged to apply.)

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION:  Submissions must be submitted using Wufoo by 3:59 pm, Thursday, July 24, 2025.
