Animal Welfare and Watermelon Mountain Ranch partner on a program to save even more pets' lives

Animal Welfare meets with Watermelon Mountain Ranch

Even more pets in the Albuquerque area will be finding a new lease on life, thanks to a new partnership between Animal Welfare and Watermelon Mountain Ranch.

Watermelon Mountain Ranch will periodically take a substantial number of dogs and cats to its Rio Rancho facility and to its extensive network of foster parents to adopt out to the public.  Among the mix will be some of the older, larger and physically challenged dogs that often go unclaimed or take longer to adopt at Animal Welfare.

Animals that are transferred to Watermelon Mountain Ranch will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. The dogs will all be groomed and trained; furthermore every canine adoption comes with five weeks of free dog training at no additional cost to the new pet owners.     

“We are proud to be a part of this historic public/private partnership with the city of Albuquerque,” says Watermelon Mountain Ranch Executive Director Sophia DiClemente. “This partnership is about saving lives and finding forever loving homes for these beautiful animals.  All of these dogs and cats need some TLC and a home to go to, and we look forward to placing them.”    

Jeanine L. Patterson, RN, Director of Albuquerque Animal Welfare says “We are proud of this groundbreaking partnership which will among other things, ease the crowding in city shelters, especially during some of the busier summer months.” 

Watermelon Mountain Ranch is New Mexico’s largest no-kill animal shelter.  About 4 to 5 thousand pets are adopted through its Rio Rancho facility every year.

Author Darlene Arden Visits Animal Welfare And Mayor Chávez

Darlene Arden, award-winning writer, lecturer, and pet author recently visited Albuquerque Animal Welfare for a tour of the Eastside Shelter and to present her latest book, "Rover, Get Off Her Leg!" to Animal Welfare Director Jeanine L. Patterson. Arden is in the midst of a trip to New Mexico. "Rover " is her fifth book, described by Susan Conant, author of Gaits of Heaven, Scratch the Surface as "a hilarious field guide to dog misdeeds that range from the annoying and embarrassing to the utterly mortifying. Fortunately for dog owners everywhere, author Darlene Arden speaks to the unspeakable with great good humor and practical wisdom."Later during her visit, Arden also visited with Mayor Martin J. Chávez and First Dog Dukes. She presented him with a copy of her latest book and talked with Mayor Chávez about their shared passion for pets. Darlene Arden is also an internationally recognized authority on toy dogs and their care.

Animal Ordinance in Albuquerque

The grace period to have your animal spayed or neutered and microchipped is over. If you do not want to spay or neuter your companion animal, you must purchase an intact animal permit for $150.

As the Animal Services Division responds to calls for service and finds that your animal is not in compliance, citations will be issued. Penalty is up to $500 and/or 90 days in jail as determined by a Metro Court judge.

City to Provide Spay and Neuter Services for Pets of Qualified Low Income Individuals and Seniors 65 Years of Age or Older

New Spay/Neuter VanThe City of Albuquerque is pleased to announce that we are scheduling surgeries for companion dogs and cats in Albuquerque. With the passage of the H.E.A.R.T. Ordinance, the City of Albuquerque is sterilizing the companion animals of low income and senior citizens at no charge to them. If you have a companion animal that needs to be sterilized and you meet the criteria, please call 311 or 768-2000.

The mobile clinic is operating all over the City of Albuquerque and targeting the areas with the highest population of need. Spaying and neutering your companion animal is good for you, your animal and the community.Please be part of the solution and schedule your appointment today!

Track Down that Wayward Pet

If you need help finding Spike or Socks, or long for a Calico or Boxer, now you can access Pet Harbor's Pet SearchLeaving www.cabq.gov, click for disclaimer for reporting lost or found pets, or request to be notified if a breed in which you are interested becomes available at one of the Animal Care Centers. Once you fill out the information request form you will be emailed automatically when an animal matching your selection shows up at one of our shelters. The request will last for 30 days.

  • Have you FOUND a cat or dog? One of the quickest ways to reunite the pet with its owner is to scan for a microchip. Click here for for list of places you can take the animal to be scanned for free.
