YOU Let the Dogs Out

Become a volunteer dog walker with AWD

August 27, 2026

Calling all dog lovers! Join the City’s Animal Welfare Department (AWD) dog walking team.

Dog walkers greatly improve the lives of shelter dogs, giving them exercise, socialization, mental stimulation and leash etiquette. Such skills boost dogs’ well-being and their chances of finding loving homes.

“Helping animals has to be some of the funnest volunteer work,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “So while you’re getting your steps in, why not walk a shelter pet?”

The City offers a specialized training program for volunteers who will be helping shelter dogs. It covers dog behavior, handling techniques, and safe practices.

“We always need volunteers to help with our furry friends,” said AWD Director Carolyn Ortega. “Whether you can spare a few hours a week or a month, or want to open your home to animals who are struggling in the shelter, there is a place for you on our volunteer team.”

To sign up or for more details, please send an email with your contact information to [email protected]. AWD staff will then have you complete an online application to join the volunteer team.

Who knows? You might meet your new best friend or help a pup find their perfect match. Let’s make the days brighter for these sweet dogs. Grab a leash and come join us for a paw-some time!
