Description
The City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department’s Open Space Division invites the community to celebrate the grand opening of the Ruth Eisenberg Trailhead—a major addition to the West Mesa Trails Plan that expands access to Albuquerque’s scenic volcanic landscape.
Made possible through the Outdoor Recreation Trails+ Grant Program, this $509,000 project (including a 50% match from the City) enhances connectivity and recreation opportunities across the West Mesa. The new trailhead links the Paseo de la Mesa Trail to the new 6.5-mile natural surface Volcano View Trail, creating a continuous network between two major recreational destinations.
This expansion offers more opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy walking, running, biking, horseback riding, and exploring Albuquerque’s unique desert terrain.
In addition, the Paseo de la Mesa Trail, a 4.5-mile asphalt multi-use trail connecting Atrisco Vista Boulevard to 81st Street, was recently resurfaced through ¼ cent Transportation Infrastructure GRT Funding totaling $1,366,036.71, improving trail quality, safety, and long-term durability.
Following the ribbon cutting, guests are invited to participate in a guided hike and bike ride to explore the new trail connections.
These improvements reflect Albuquerque’s continued commitment to creating accessible, high-quality public spaces and advancing a sustainable outdoor recreation network throughout the city.
