UPDATE: City, New Mexico United Advance Toward Stadium
City and New Mexico United highlight next steps towards soccer stadium at Balloon Fiesta Park.
Mayor Tim Keller, City’s Parks and Recreation and New Mexico United CEO & Owner Peter Trevisani partnered together to announce the next steps toward development of a soccer stadium at Balloon Fiesta Park.
Ahead of the busy week of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, Mayor Keller and local partners announced the city has entered an agreement with a contractor who will begin pricing the infrastructure upgrades that are needed for the stadium.
“With Balloon Fiesta just ahead, we know many people will be asking where we stand with the stadium that was promised,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “And that’s why we can say today we are one step closer to making this fandom stadium a reality, moving forward with assessments of Balloon Fiesta Park as its new home.”
The City has worked with New Mexico United for several years to create a dedicated stadium for the premier soccer team. Several sites were evaluated, with the Balloon Fiesta Park site being chosen for its ease of access, available parking, and ample amenities as well for the synergies it creates with programming at the park.
“While Isotopes park was a great place to launch the team, this multi-purpose stadium ensures the long-term sustainability of New Mexico United and enables us to dream big and bring in teams and events that don’t exist and cannot exist with the current facility such as a professional women’s soccer team,” said Trevisani.
The City has committed to preparing the site for the stadium. The new United Stadium will be paid for by New Mexico United, and will be a dedicated park for thousands of fans to gather. The initial plans call for an 8,000 to 10,000 seat stadium with exclusive corporate and premium seating, accessible seating, and several food and beverage vendors.
