Slowing Speeders Down: Two New Speed Cameras Go Live

Two more are expected in August.

July 30, 2026
Two new automated speed enforcement cameras (ASE) are now up and running in two of Albuquerque’s busiest areas: Tramway near Lomas (southbound) and Paseo Del Norte west of Barstow (westbound). The city will also launch two other cameras on Coors by St. Joseph’s in both northbound and southbound lanes. Those are expected in early August.

The City began installing ASE cameras in 2022 to help address widespread dangerous speeding. Data show significant changes in driver behavior, with both average speeds and the number of drivers speeding decreasing. The total number of active cameras now is 38.

Selection of ASE camera locations was based on a combination of crash data, High Fatality and Injury Network maps, and local feedback. The City has entered into a memorandum of agreement with the New Mexico Department of Transportation to govern ASE camera placement on state roads like Coors and Paseo Del Norte.

“With ASE cameras in place, drivers are slowing down on our riskiest stretches, making Albuquerque streets safer,” says Department of Municipal Development Director Jennifer Turner.

In the first three years of the program, the initial 20 cameras resulted in:

  • A 54.7% to 96.2% decrease in drivers exceeding the posted speed limit by 10+ miles per hour.
  • A 0.6 mph to 8.8 mph decrease in average driver speed.

Further, since its launch in 2022, revenues from the project have funded critical road-safety projects and resulted in 31,000 hours of community service provided.
