City Upgrading Alameda and Barstow

ALBUQUERQUE – The City is widening Alameda Boulevard between Rich Court and Barstow Street as part of a project to improve traffic flow, walkability and drainage in the area.

Westbound Alameda from Rich to Barstow will be widened to two driving lanes and a left-turn lane onto southbound Barstow. An 8-ft sidewalk will also be added along the north side of Alameda, connecting to the existing sidewalk at Rich and on northbound Barstow. The project, led by the City’s Department of Municipal Development (DMD), also includes an upgrade to the storm drain on the east side of Barstow.

“One of the City’s best tools to make everyday life smoother and safer for people is smarter infrastructure, especially with our roads.” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Even better when both drivers and pedestrians benefit.”

“We’ve needed these changes for years, and it’s great to see this project moving forward,” said City Councilor Brook Bassan. “These important enhancements will make a real difference for everyone who lives, works, and travels through this area,”

“This project will improve safety and accessibility along Alameda, making it easier for all road users to navigate,” said DMD Director Jennifer Turner.

Traffic changes will begin Thursday, August 27, when westbound Alameda between Rich Court and Barstow Street closes. Barstow will remain open with one lane in each direction between Alameda to the La Cueva Channel. For travelers heading west on Alameda, the detour route is to turn left onto Ventura, right onto Signal, right onto Barstow, and left onto Alameda. The westbound closure is expected to remain in place through the end of the year.

This project is set to take seven months to complete.
