Brightening the Metro: Hundreds of Lights Installed
Even more on the way.
As part of the City’s ongoing work to make neighborhoods safer and more appealing, the Department of Municipal Development (DMD) has installed or replaced more than 500 streetlights throughout Albuquerque over the past year.
The work includes 187 new solar-powered streetlights along East Central, repairs to existing streetlight infrastructure, and new festoon lighting along Central and in other areas. Additional lighting upgrades are also underway as part of other projects, with final counts still being determined. Overall the work is helping improve visibility and safety for people citywide.
“We are doing everything we can to make this great city even better and brighter,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Investing in even just a few lights pays off in countless ways.”
Studies have shown that an increase in streetlights can reduce crime at night by 15% while also making roads safer for pedestrians to cross and cyclists to ride on.
“Brightening streets creates safer spaces for everyone,” says DMD Director Jennifer Turner.
