New Patio Space for Gateway Center Residents

Recreational area creates a low-barrier space to heal and build community
June 26, 2025

ALBUQUERQUE - Today, the City of Albuquerque previewed a new patio space designed to expand on the Gateway Center’s promise of being a low-barrier service that promotes healing and community.

The space includes shade canopies, tables, benches, a bike rack, and a small Recreational dog park. There will also be planter boxes installed to begin building a community garden.

Residents celebrated the space with a cup of lemonade donated by Wow Wow Lemonade.

“We know the pathway to stability may be overwhelming at times, which is why a space to socialize, get some fresh air, and unwind is critical,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Having low-barrier support is essential to helping people move forward, and that includes a welcoming space where pets are allowed, because they’re part of the healing process too.”

“To be able to just come out and relax, people don’t realize when you’re in this position, what this patio means to the residents who live here day in and day out. To me, it’s just amazing,” said Gateway Center Resident Lisa.

“When someone is ready to accept services and take their first step toward recovery and treatment, we know they don’t want to choose between support and their beloved companion,” said Health, Housing, and Homelessness Director Gilbert Ramirez. “In addition, a Recreational space creates an area where people can build community and talk about their shared experiences.”

The Housing and Treatment Navigation Center is a 90-day program that offers access to case management, workforce training, and connection to substance use disorder treatment. This includes referrals to outpatient treatment at Ideal Option, which is located steps away in Gateway Center.

This is the final element of the first phase of the Housing and Treatment Navigation Center. Construction began in 2021. To date, 3 out of 4 services at Gateway Center are operational. Medical Sobering, the fourth and final service, is expected to come online this fall.

Construction was completed by Bradburry Stamm Construction for $1.7 million in Federal Capital Outlay funding.

The open and welcoming design was created by Mullen Heller Architecture firm.
