City Funding Approved for West Mesa Ridge Housing Development
On Monday night, City Council approved $8,000,000 from the Housing Forward Fund that was awarded to YES Housing’s West Mesa Ridge affordable housing development. The 128-unit project at 701 Coors Blvd NW brings needed, affordable one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments to Albuquerque’s west side.
“Albuquerque needs affordable housing all over town, which was underscored again by neighbors who participated in our Constructive Conversations series,” said Deputy Director of Housing Joseph Montoya. “With the approval of this funding, West Mesa Ridge can get ready to start building.”
All 128 apartments will be affordable to people making 60% of the Area Median Income or below, with 13 units additionally subsidized for very low-income households. The development also features community space for resident activities, a common kitchen, library, computer lab, exercise room, and laundry.
“We’ve had community conversations with the neighborhood associations, community leaders and elected representatives from the area for more than a year. We’ve listened to their input and ideas and incorporated them into our plans,” said YES Housing Founder and CEO Chris Baca. “We are working diligently to make sure that we are good neighbors and helping activate the site.”
The City’s contribution towards the project serves as gap financing and covers 18% of the total projected development cost.
“Affordable housing is essential for the well-being of our families. We are empowering children to learn and grow while providing parents the peace of mind that comes with secure housing,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Our commitment to affordable housing is a commitment to the future of Albuquerque. By investing in projects like West Mesa Ridge, we are building a city where every family has the opportunity to succeed.”
