Global travel authorities spotlight Duke City for culture, affordability, and one-of-a-kind experiences

December 06, 2025

ALBUQUERQUE — Albuquerque has been named one of the best places to travel in 2026 by multiple leading travel publications, earning a place on high-profile lists released by Frommer’s, AFAR, Condé Nast Traveler, and AARP. Together, these rankings position the Duke City among the top global destinations for cultural immersion, natural beauty, and meaningful travel in the year ahead.

Frommer’s selected Albuquerque for its rich Indigenous heritage, world-class cultural events, and access to some of the continent’s most significant historical sites. Editors praised the city for offering transformative experiences rooted in deep cultural traditions alongside innovative new attractions.

AFAR highlighted Albuquerque in its Best Places to Travel in 2026 guide for its dynamic arts scene, outdoor adventure, and evolving culinary landscape, noting that the city delivers “a sense of place that travelers won’t find anywhere else.”

Condé Nast Traveler recognized Albuquerque among its Best Places to Go in 2026 and its Best Places to Go in North America & the Caribbean, emphasizing the city's blend of ancient history, multicultural identity, and modern creativity. The publication called Albuquerque “a destination where culture is alive, layered, and celebrated year-round.”

AARP named Albuquerque one of 2026’s Most Affordable Destinations, pointing to the city’s accessible lodging, high-value experiences, and unique attractions that make it a standout choice for travelers seeking both richness and affordability.

Albuquerque also offers unparalleled access to living Indigenous culture. Travelers can explore the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, celebrating the heritage of New Mexico’s 19 Pueblos, or visit Acoma Pueblo (Sky City), founded around 1250 and recognized as the oldest continuously inhabited community in North America.

“Being named to multiple ‘Best Places to Travel’ lists for 2026 is an extraordinary honor for our city,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Albuquerque stands apart because it offers authentic, meaningful experiences rooted in thousands of years of culture and history. These national recognitions shine a spotlight on what makes our city truly special.”

Travel editors across all four publications emphasized a growing demand for immersive cultural travel, and Albuquerque’s blend of Indigenous, Hispanic, and contemporary influences, along with its unique landscapes, cuisine, and creative community, earned it top rankings alongside destinations in Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific.

“This wave of recognition underscores what makes Albuquerque a distinctive and globally competitive destination,” said Visit Albuquerque President and CEO Tania Armenta. “Our culture, art, cuisine, and outdoor recreation offer travelers a richer and more authentic experience than they will find anywhere else. Visit Albuquerque works year-round to promote our city as a top travel destination and secure this type of media coverage. These accolades help share that story with the world.”

Tourism remains a vital part of Albuquerque’s economy. According to Visit Albuquerque, more than 6 million overnight visitors travel to the city each year, generating over $2 billion in annual spending, supporting more than 45,000 jobs, and contributing over $268 million in tax revenue that funds core City services, infrastructure, and community development.

“National and international recognition from respected travel authorities strengthens Albuquerque’s brand and drives real economic impact,” said Economic Development Director Max Gruner. “These rankings support small businesses, boost visitor spending, and enhance quality of life for residents year-round. They show that Albuquerque is not just a great place to visit, it’s a great place to live.”
