Business Owners Recover Vandalism Costs
ALBUQUERQUE — Business owners across Albuquerque received much-needed help to recover from acts of vandalism. The City of Albuquerque launched the Window Grant program on September 1, 2024, offering financial assistance to repair broken windows caused by vandalism.
The program, which ended on December 31, 2024, supported 87 business owners, covering repairs for 210 broken windows. In total, the City has provided or committed $200,000 to help alleviate the financial burden of these damages.
"This was a great program," said Rosalinda Castaneda, owner of Wigs, Wigs, Wigs. "The funds came in really handy, and I am truly appreciative."
A collaboration between the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) and the Economic Development Department's Small Business Office, the initiative aimed to protect businesses and keep them open to the public. Participants expressed thanks for the program’s timely support, many credited the funding with helping them avoid further financial losses and maintain customer traffic.
“We will keep finding new ways to prevent crime and support those affected by it,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Replacing these windows helps keep businesses open and helps make sure they have the resources they need to recover and continue serving our community.”
The grant reimbursed up to 80% of window replacement or repair costs, with a maximum of $5,000 per business. An additional $1,000 was available for those incorporating environmentally sustainable “green” glass or security glass into their repairs.
Participating businesses were required to complete the APD Business Crime Prevention Security Survey. Meanwhile, APD’s Real Time Crime Center continues to assist in tracking criminals using over 10,000 citywide cameras. Officers have also increased proactive patrols in areas with higher vandalism rates.
