Balloon Museum

Welcome to the Anderson Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum, a Gateway to Exploration, Discovery, & Achievement.

Explore the history, science, sport, and art of ballooning and other innovative forms of flight.

About the Museum

Balloons take flight above the Balloon Museum.

Named in honor of Albuquerque's pioneering aeronauts Maxie Anderson and Ben Abruzzo, the museum opened in 2005, and has since welcomed over one million visitors from across New Mexico, the United States, and around the world. Read our Strategic Plan.

Description

The Balloon Museum is excited to partner with Be Greater Than Average to offer a variety of STEAM Camp opportunities this summer.

TAKE FLIGHT!  camps will explore and tell exciting stories of all things defying gravity. Campers may be telling stories in film, participating in STEAM experiments or building robots - no matter what you can be sure that drones, rockets, inter-galactic space travel, and even paper airplanes will be part of the TAKE FLIGHT! lesson!

Engineering   
Ages 10 - 17
July 8 - 12 (9 am - 4 pm)

This robot building experience is an opportunity to learn how to work with a team to design, build and compete with a robot. Campers will learn how to safely use power tools, strategize and plan a robot design as well as work together to write an engineering notebook and deliver a marketing presentation. Students will use their imaginations as they learn about the Engineering Design Process and how our patented ICE process can be applied to all problems they face in life. Campers are mentored by leaders from R4Robotics, a nationally ranked robotics team.

Description

The High Desert Jazz Band and the Albuquerque Concert Band head back to the east lawn of the Balloon Museum this summer for a series of five FREE evening concerts that feature themes popular with the crowds.

Attendees are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets.  A local Food Truck will be on site so that attendees may purchase food and beverages while enjoying the concert.

The Balloon Museum will have extended hours and FREE admission from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. during each summer concert performance.

Remaining Concert Dates: July 17, 31, and August 14, 2019.

Founded in 2012, the High Desert Jazz Band is an all-volunteer community group bringing the sounds of the Big Band Era to private gatherings, community events, and charities. The musicians and conductor benefit by having an opportunity to work together to advance their artistic talents, while preserving the art of American Jazz, and contributing to the cultural well-being of the community.      

The Albuquerque Concert Band is an all-volunteer ensemble of adult musicians rehearsing and performing throughout the year. In existence for over forty years, the band has been enriching the culture of the Albuquerque community in performance of the great heritage of band music.

Minecraft Mod Install
Ages 8 - 17
July 22 - 26 (9am - 2pm)

Learn how to install Minecraft mods and how to package your favorite mods together. Learn some of our best tips and tricks in building with cubes to create interactive and fun places to play. Spend time alongside other students who love to think and build in squares as you collaborate and enjoy this online adventure. On Thursday, parents/guardians are invited to attend the workshop at 2pm to learn how to install a mod as well as spend time playing in the student's virtual world.

Students must have a Minecraft account and know the password for this workshop. In addition, students will need to bring their own laptop to use during class. If you do not have a Minecraft account, parents/guardians can arrive at 12:30 on Monday to get assistance setting up an account. You will need a credit card to purchase the online account - which will cost $30.

STEAM Take Flight!
Ages 6 - 9
July 22 - 26 (9am - 2pm)

In 2019, Campers will explore the science of physics with a series of objects that fly. From paper planes and hot air balloons to straw rockets, drones and spacecraft eggs, objects will be defying gravity in this physics experience.  Innovative and enriching experiences will capture the student's attention as they are introduced to engineering and scientific thinking. Students will be encouraged to explore cause and effect, build with purpose and problem solve as they run through a variety of engaging experiments and activities. Students will be mentored and encouraged by our highly trained teen scientists and inspiring adult instructors.

Media Arts
10 – 17 Years Old
July 22 – 26 (9am – 2pm)

Experience the world of Media Arts as you learn about video branding, drawing in 3D and how to communicate ideas in a story using technology. Campers will learn the basics of video editing using Blender, a free downloadable program. Other topics that will be covered include: camera operation, script writing and sound recording as campers use stop motion animation, green screen technology and other techniques to create their story. There is no experience necessary, but a laptop computer is highly recommended. We do have some computers that can be lent to students, please inquire prior to registering.
