Free Wednesday: Film Screening

See the documentary Goya: Crazy like a Genius, written and narrated by renowned Time magazine art critic Robert Hughes. His film chronicles Goya’s accomplishments as a court painter, satirist, and war reporter as well as his inner struggles with madness, fear, and despair.

Thursday, May 17, 2012, Programs from 6-8 p.m., Lecture begins at 6:30

Explore the intersection of 1950s design in fashion, cars and architecture. Learn about Albuquerque’s Googie architecture and automobile- inspired fashion designs from Deb Slaney, Curator of History. See classic cars of the period and learn from enthusiasts what inspired their designs.  On 3rd Thursdays, the museum galleries and the Gallery Store open from 5-8:30 p.m. Slate Street Café is serving a special menu of small plates.

 

Heritage Day at Casa San Ysidro: The Gutiérrez-Minge House

Casa San Ysidro will celebrate Heritage Day with music, performances and artist demonstrations. Casa San Ysidro: The Gutiérrez-Minge House is located at 973 Old Church Road, Corrales, NM.  Admission is free.


28th Annual Albuquerque Museum and NM Council of Car Clubs Automobile Show

Sunday, May 20, 10:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

An outdoor car show of antique, vintage, classic, sports, exotic, and special interest automobiles. Also trucks, motorcycles, motor scooters, tractors and vintage campers. Inside the Museum a Toy and Model Program, and an Auto Art Exhibit are featured in the Special Events room. This event is free to spectators.

Participants, please bring a shade umbrella (no canopies are allowed). For further information, or if you are interested in participating in the show, please view the Information Letter and Registration Form.

Family Fun: Puccini to Popcorn

Saturday, June 2, 2:00-4:00 p.m.

3rd Thursday: Ancient Americas Family Night

Thursday, June 21, 5:00-8:30 p.m.

Drop the kiddos off to create artwork inspired by the ancients while you sample chocolate and learn about its role from chocolate artisan and historian, Mark Sciscenti (limited seating).  Pick up the kids after the talk and enjoy a 7:30 pm performance by Aztec dance group, PAZ Ehecatl.  On 3rd Thursdays, the museum galleries and the Gallery Store open from 5-8:30 p.m. Slate Street Café is serving a special menu of small plates.

JULY

Talk

Sunday, July 8, 1:00 p.m.

Art historian Khristaan Villela, a Scholar in Residence at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design, discusses the ancient Maya concept of time and timekeeping as evidenced in their art and writing. By 200 CE, the Mayan people had developed a calendar system based on cycles of 260 and 365 days, as well as a reckoning of days that we call the Long Count. In this talk learn why the ancient Maya developed this system anddiscover why the world will not end in December 2012.

 

Concert Series: Music of Latin America

Thursday, July 12, 6:00 p.m.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas, this series features classical music from and/or inspired by Latin America. Concerts will focus on music of the colonial era and work by 20th century composers inspired by indigenous and folk music of the region. All music is performed by the Chatter Players.

This concert will feature a selection of string quartets written by Latin American and Latino composers. 

 

Adult Class: Papel Picado

Saturday, July 14, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Learn the basics and history of papel picado, the Mexican tradition of cut paper, with artist Catalina Delgado Trunk. Participants will cut their own designs to create fantastic centerpieces or decorative cards.    Her recent series, Cuatro Senores, is the inspiration for a display in the museum lobby this summer. Fee $35, registration required, 10% discount for members.

This concert will focus on 20th century composers who researched Latin American indigenous music and instruments.  They incorporated these themes and instruments into their work in different and interesting ways.

 

 

Family Fun Day: Food of the Americas

Saturday, July 21, 1:00-4:00 p.m.

Learn where some of our favorite foods come from while exploring the work of papel picado (Mexican cut paper) artist Catalina Delgado Trunk. Design a mythical guardian for your garden to usher in a good harvest. This event is sponsored by Wells Fargo.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas, this series features classical music from and/or inspired by Latin America. Concerts will focus on music of the colonial era and work by 20th century composers inspired by indigenous and folk music of the region. All music is performed by the Chatter Players.

This concert will feature a selection of work for wind instruments by Heitor Villas-Lobos, one of the most significant and best- known Latin American composers.

 

AUGUST

Concert Series: Music of Latin America

Thursday, August 2, 6 p.m.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas, this series features classical music from and/or inspired by Latin America. Concerts will focus on music of the colonial era and work by 20th century composers inspired by indigenous and folk music of the region. All music is performed by the Chatter Players.

This concert will feature music that was composed in the Spanish colonies within Central and South America. This music, written mostly by composers affiliated with the Catholic Church, has recently grown in popularity as more compositions have been discovered within Church libraries

 

Play: Paloma and the Mayan Flute: A Trip Through the Light Fantastic of Ancient America

August 9, 6:00 p.m. & August 12, 2:00 p.m.

FUSION Theater presents a multi-media tale of adventure that jettisons a young archeologist back to the pre-Columbian era. With the guidance of a Mayan flute, the supreme “virtual device,” she meets a myriad of characters and challenges that uncover a unique connection and resonance between “history” and the present. Weaving a live flute choir, film, and dance along with ASL interpretation into the theatrical narrative, Paloma and the Mayan Flute reminds us all that the earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena.

Hear the talk The Ancient Americas in Modern Art by Andrew Connors, Curator of Art, which explores indigenous influences on the visual arts, architecture,and music.  Take a seat at the dialogue tables to share influences on your contemporary lifestyle.

The Albuquerque Museum Sunday Morning Free

Sundays, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

The Albuquerque Museum opens its door every Sunday morning for free.  Visit the changing and permanent exhibitions, have a meal or beverage at the café and shop in the Gallery Store.  Fees for special exhibits and events still apply on free times. 

 

The Albuquerque Museum 1st Wednesday Free

On the first Wednesday of the Month, General Museum admission is free from 9:00am - 5:00pm. Free admission applies to general museum admission only. Fees for special exhibits and events still apply on free times.

Starting July 2011, general museum admission is free from 5:00-8:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month. The museum galleries and the Gallery Store open from 5-8:30 p.m. Slate Street Café is serving a special menu of small plates.
