Safety in Numbers

Quarterly report outlines transit system progress.

August 18, 2026

ALBUQUERQUE – With more riders on buses, ABQ RIDE saw a slight increase in safety incidents for the quarter and an overall improvement in transit safety as fiscal year 2026 closes.

Quarterly reports began in spring of 2024 following introduction of the transit safety officer (TSO) program. Since then, ABQ RIDE launched its long-range security plan, centralized its safety team with APD and has continued growing the TSO program. The latest report closes the fiscal year and shows safety numbers for April, May, and June.

“Better data is helping us keep people safer,” said Transit Director Leslie Keener. “While numbers were slightly up this quarter, they are down as a whole thanks to our new strategies. We’ll continue rolling forward with our long-range plan, so the bus will only get better from here.”

  • A 9% decrease in call volume following 45% decline in reactive calls.

“Our safety teams focus on not allowing issues to board the bus,” said APD Deputy Commander Todd Mock.“And strategically placing mobile officer units in transit corridors throughout the city is resulting in faster response times, which should continue to improve as we grow the TSO team.”
The next step in implementing transit’s security plan is to continue adding TSOs, improving data collection and reporting, and implementing the new internal safety division this summer.
