ABQ RIDE Participates in 20th Annual Read to Me Book Drive

City partners with local non-profit to inspire early childhood literacy.

ALBUQUERQUE: Beginning this week, ABQ RIDE will assist in collecting children’s books as part of the 20th Annual Children’s Book Drive through the Read to Me! Literacy Network, a region-wide independent collaboration to encourage early childhood literacy. Since 2006, ABQ RIDE has participated in this initiative through the Discover a Book program which has generated tens of thousands of books for children and young people to pick up while utilizing the local bus system.

“Access to books is key in building a strong foundation for our future generations and ABQ RIDE is proud to be a part of this important initiative,” said Transit Director Leslie Keener.

In 2022, the Read to Me! Literacy Network collected 33,000 books from the community and are working to exceed that amount in 2023. Books collected through this drive are distributed not only to ABQ RIDE buses but also to Title 1 schools and learning centers, local laundromats, food pantry sites, and community centers.

Donations of new and gently used children’s books can be dropped off at a total of 70 locations across Albuquerque including all Blakes Lotaburger locations and City of Albuquerque public libraries now through April 15.
