January 27, 2025

Albuquerque City Councilor Dan Champine, District 8, has released the following statement regarding the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) investigation related to the Joint Air Quality Control Board:

“I am aware of significant misinformation being circulated regarding the Environmental Protection Agency’s recent announcement of an investigation of a complaint related to the Albuquerque City Council’s 2023 actions concerning the Joint Air Quality Control Board (JAQCB). It is important to clarify the facts and ensure transparency for our community.

First, the EPA’s announcement reflects a standard process initiated by the filing of a complaint, and this is not a determination of wrongdoing. The investigation allows the EPA to review and assess the matter, ensuring compliance with federal regulations. Such investigations are routinely conducted and underscore the agency’s commitment to due process.

Second, I remain confident in the legality and appropriateness of the Council’s actions regarding the JAQCB. I am confident that the decisions were made following careful consideration, public input, and adherence to all applicable laws. The EPA’s review is welcome and if called upon, I will fully cooperate and provide any relevant information.

Finally, I urge the public to rely on verified sources of information regarding this matter. Misinformation creates unnecessary confusion and undermines trust in the process. I am committed to keeping the community informed and will provide updates as appropriate.

Thank you for your understanding and continued engagement as we all work to address these concerns transparently and constructively.”
