2,200+ Enjoy Free Summer of Nonviolence Drive-In Movie at Balloon Fiesta Park
ALBUQUERQUE – More than 2,200 people fell head over heels for a free night of connection, food, and a screening of the cult classic 10 Things I Hate About You at Balloon Fiesta Park.
The Summer of Nonviolence event was sponsored by Bernalillo County, City of Albuquerque Parks & Recreation, Albuquerque Community Safety Department, and Albuquerque Police Department. The summer-long initiative encourages youth to take a pledge of nonviolence and offers a series of events throughout the season for young people to have fun and stay safe.
Attendees who took the pledge of nonviolence received a commemorative “I Pledge” Summer of Nonviolence t-shirt. The pledge is a commitment to engaging in positive actions and promoting peace throughout the summer.
Those who filled out a short survey were given vouchers to use at any of the onsite food trucks which included A+ Plus Creperie, Zia Strong, XO Fast Foods, and Ordinarily Beautiful Cotton Candy. Adding to the festivities was a face painting station operated by Face Painting by Susan Gomez.
The Summer of Nonviolence youth ambassadors known as “Gen P” (or Generation Peace) were also on hand to kick-off the event greeting guests and answering questions around the pledge and the campaign.
Attendees were also provided access and information to helpful support services including: behavioral health, shelter, food assistance programs, and educational programs. Part of the Summer of Nonviolence’s campaign aims to connect local families with the resources needed to foster a stronger, more resilient community.
“Our youth are the heart of Albuquerque’s future,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “This Summer of Nonviolence initiative helps us nurture hope, unity, and safety by bringing families together in meaningful, uplifting ways.”
“Events like this give young people a chance to just be themselves with no pressure and no expectations, just a fun and relaxed night surrounded by community,” said Lisa Sedillo-White, Deputy County Manager for General Services. “It’s what summer is all about: connecting, laughing and enjoying the moment in a safe and welcoming space.”
“These events create a welcoming space where families and young people can feel supported and connected,” said ACS Community Outreach Manager Jeffery Bustamante. “We’re proud to help build a community where everyone can enjoy safe, joyful moments all summer long.”
Our fourth, and final, Summer of Nonviolence drive-in movie event of 2025, featuring the film Twilight, will take place Wednesday, July 30!
The campaign offers a series of events throughout the season for young people to have fun and stay safe. For more information about this event and future happenings, please visit the Summer of Nonviolence website.
