IRS Issues Alert for Benefit Recipients Who Don't File a Tax Return and Have Dependents

April 21, 2020

Yesterday, the IRS issued an alert for recipients of Social Security Administration retirement (SSA), Railroad Retirement (RRB) and survivor or disability benefits (SSDI) who have dependent children (including grandchildren) informing them that they only have until tomorrow, Wednesday, April 22, at 10 a.m. (MST), to file a form that will allow them to get an additional $500 economic stimulus payment for dependents sooner. Any of recipients these types of benefits who do not file the form by that deadline will have to wait until they file their 2020 tax return to receive a stimulus payment for their dependents.

Those who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and did not file taxes in 2018 or 2019 have until the end of April to complete this form.

Anyone who meets the following criteria will need to fill out a non-filer form by the April 22 deadline to get their full Economic Impact Payment, including payments for dependents:

  • Receives Social Security benefits, Social Security survivor or disability benefits, or Railroad Retirement benefits (RRB);
  • Has a dependent child or children under age 17; and
  • Has not filed taxes in 2018 or 2019.

Emergencies challenge the delivery and management of emergency public information, warning and emergency protective action notifications. The Albuquerque Joint Information Center (JIC) functions as a coordinated Albuquerque Metro Area public information system that will gather and analyze data related to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in New Mexico and serve as a source of accurate and comprehensive information.
