Instructions for residents wishing to obtain services through the free Mobile health unit

Information for how to obtain services through the free Mobile health unit.

For qualified low-income to moderate-income residents of Albuquerque:

  • For DOG and CATS who have no medical issues or health concerns.
  • Please call 311
  • When 311 verifies qualifications, Animal Welfare will return your call to schedule an appointment for the Mobile Service Van within 3 days
  • We can only accommodate the first 30 qualified callers for each van event date
  • Surgery service Vouchers for pets belonging to qualified citizens will be issued via the mail.
  • Those qualifying for a surgery voucher DO NOT need to bring their pet to the van event. AWD staff will contact them and issue a voucher via mail.   
  • Proof of qualifications including ID, proof of residence, and proof of income eligibility MUST be presented at the time of your appointment.
  • Cats must be at least 8 weeks or older
  • Dogs must be at least 8 weeks or older

What do I bring as proof of income and residency?

Proof of qualifications including valid ID, proof of residence (zip code), and proof of income eligibility MUST be presented at the time of your van appointment.

What would prove low-income status?

  • Award letter for an EBT card issued by the State of New Mexico for Food Stamps, OR
  • Either the annual letter regarding benefits or the monthly benefit card for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), OR
  • Award letter for an EBT card issued by the State of New Mexico for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, OR
  • Award letter for a Medicaid health benefit card, OR
  • Current income taxes.
  • Current check stubs.
  • Signing and submitting an affidavit swearing that your income is within the figures listed on the table above for Low Income.

What would be proof of moderate-income status?

  • Previous or current Tax Return form
  • Last 2 paycheck stubs
  • Signing and submitting an affidavit swearing that your income is within the figures listed on the table above for Moderate Income

What will be done for my pet when I visit the van?

Dogs: Canine Distemper-Adenovirus Type 2-Parainfluenza-Parvovirus (DA2PP) Vaccine and rabies vaccination

Cat: Feline Rhinotracheitis-Calici-Panleukopenia (FVRCP) Vaccine and a rabies vaccine

Microchip implantation if needed.

The mobile we care unit WILL NOT provide care for sick or injured pets. 

What is required to obtain a spay/neuter voucher?

  • Must be 18 years or older with a Valid Driver's license or official ID card (no exceptions).
  • Proof of low-income or moderate-income status, unless you sign and submit an affidavit swearing that your income is within the figures listed on the table above for low income or moderate income.
  • An alternate contact number for the microchip registration: someone who has a different phone number than yours. If your pet is already microchipped, please tell us.

Reasons for Disqualification:

  • Pet owners under 18 years of age
  • Pets that are not old enough for the services. (please see above for age limits)
  • Aggressive animals
  • Unhealthy animals

Residents visiting the mobile We Care Unit must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Appointments will be done in a “drive thru” fashion.
  • Please stay in your Vehicle with your pet.
  • AWD representatives will assist with paperwork and services
  • Veterinary assistants and AWD volunteers will be available to take your pet from your vehicle for services.
  • Cats must be in a carrier, No exceptions! Dogs must be on leash!
  • Aggressive pets will be turned away. Aggressive animals are a safety hazard for our staff and Volunteers
  • Site Location will be given at the time of your appointment.
  • Drive up at your appointment time only. Please follow the directions of attendants who will be wearing yellow vests and signs posted at the site. 

Will the mobile services be canceled if there’s inclement weather?

  • Mobile visits may be canceled in the event of inclement weather. Please check our website for updated information in the event of inclement weather cabq.gov/pets
