High and Low Impact Recreation

Low Impact Recreation on Open Space Lands

Low impact recreation is permitted in most Open Space lands. Low impact recreation includes:

  • Hiking
  • Bicycling
  • Mountain biking
  • In-line skating
  • Horseback riding

Open space manages lands where low-impact recreation is not permitted including specified wildlife and agricultural preserves. These areas are posted clearly with signs. Trespassers and violators will be punished by applicable laws.

See Etiquette & Rules for further details.

High Impact Recreation

High impact recreation is prohibited in Open Space lands. High impact recreation includes such activities as soccer, football, frisbee, softball, and any other activity that harms or impacts the fragile ecosystems in the Open Space lands.

However, certain forms of high impact recreation are permitted in the following areas managed by Open Space, as defined by official Open Space documents.

For questions about permissible uses on Open Space lands, please call our administrative offices at 452-5200.
