Open Space Lands Recreation
Low Impact Recreation on Open Space Lands
Low impact recreation is permitted in most Open Space lands. Low impact recreation includes:
- Hiking
- Bicycling
- Mountain biking
- In-line skating
- Horseback riding
Open space manages lands where low-impact recreation is not permitted including specified wildlife and agricultural preserves. These areas are posted clearly with signs. Trespassers and violators will be punished by applicable laws.

High Impact Recreation
High impact recreation is prohibited in Open Space lands. High impact recreation includes such activities as soccer, football, frisbee, softball, and any other activity that harms or impacts the fragile ecosystems in the Open Space lands.
However, certain forms of high impact recreation are permitted in the following areas managed by Open Space, as defined by official Open Space documents.
- Boca Negra Horseman's Complex
- George J. Maloof Memorial Air Park
- The Shooting Range Park
- Montessa Park Off-Road Vehicle Area
- The Brent Baca Memorial Disc Golf Course (courtesy Albuquerque Disc Golf Association at abqdiscgolf.org/courses)
