Parks & Recreation Hosts First Ever Polar Bear Plunge

Proceeds will benefit the Shanta Strong Swim Fund & the BioPark’s polar bears & penguins
January 07, 2020

The City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department is calling all thrill seekers to “take the plunge” at the City’s first ever Polar Bear Plunge at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at the West Mesa Aquatic Center. Proceeds raised from the 2020 Al’burrr’querque Polar Bear Plunge will benefit the Shanta Strong Swim Fund and the ABQ BioPark’s polar bears and penguins.

“We’re daring all Burqueños to take the plunge and help raise money to provide swimming lessons to kids in need,” stated Dave Simon, Director of Parks and Recreation. “At least you’ll be freezin’ for a reason.”

Participation requires a minimum $30 tax-deductible donation; donations of $50 or more include a commemorative towel! Anyone brave enough to “take the plunge” will jump in to the 50-degree waters of the outdoor slide pool at the West Mesa Aquatic Center. The pool has been specially prepared for the adventure. Free hot cocoa and polar bear snacks will be available for all participants.

This event is being held to raise funds for the Shanta Strong Swim Fund, which was established last year to help pay for swim lessons for kids in need of financial assistance. The fund is named for Shanta Hanish, a former lifeguard, who was a strong advocate for teaching kids pool safety early in life knowing that the skills she was teaching could save a life one day.
