Locker #505 Comes Through With Last-Minute Clothing Donation

May 21, 2020

When the City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) needed clothing items donated for people experiencing homelessness, Locker #505 came through in only four hours.

One of the roles the City’s EOC plays is coordinating logistics when a need arises related to the coronavirus outbreak. On April 25, they received a request from a shelter coordinator asking for clothing for several people as soon as possible. Although Locker #505 is a nonprofit that usually focuses on youth between kindergarten and 12th grade, they jumped into action. Within four hours on a Saturday evening, they had dropped off items for 200 people, including socks, underwear, shirts, and pants in a variety of sizes from youth to adult.

“The number of organizations and individuals who have stepped up over the past couple of months has been a testament to the strength of the One Albuquerque spirit. Thank you to Locker #505 for being another bright spot in Albuquerque during this pandemic,” said Mayor Tim Keller.

“We focus on kids but larger than that, in a pandemic or emergency like this, we are here to help the community and this was just our way to give back,” said Locker #505 Director Kim Kerschen.

Locker #505’s mission is to provide clothing for students in need. They provide a week’s worth of clothing to students who are referred to them through their school three times a year. They take donations of gently used clothes and also accept monetary donations that allow them to purchase items new, such as socks and shoes.

Emergencies challenge the delivery and management of emergency public information, warning and emergency protective action notifications. The Albuquerque Joint Information Center (JIC) functions as a coordinated Albuquerque Metro Area public information system that will gather and analyze data related to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in New Mexico and serve as a source of accurate and comprehensive information.
