March 8, 2023

In continuing their response to the housing crisis in Albuquerque, the City has released a convenient, easy-to-reference report that overviews the comprehensive vision of Housing Forward ABQ, an emergency initiative that addresses the scale of the housing problem, and provides immediate solutions.

The new document, titled “Housing Forward ABQ: Background Research and Information Report” provides an array of valuable background research and information, and highlights the initiative’s priority topic areas such as motel/hotel and office conversions, accessory dwelling units (ADU), the undersupply of housing for all income levels (“the missing middle housing”), protecting tenant interests and encouraging a strong construction workforce.
Importantly, the report provides case studies for each topic area solution that illustrate successful implementation in other cities around the country.

“Albuquerque families feel and see the housing crisis every day. The Housing Forward ABQ initiative lays out a bold course of action to lower prices, break down barriers to access, and create urgently-needed housing for our city,” says Mayor Tim Keller. “Housing can’t wait. This is about the security and prosperity of our families, and ensuring they have a place in the city we call home.”

With a goal of increasing housing supply and promoting access for all, the Housing Forward ABQ initiative is shaping the City’s future, setting a goal to create 5000 new units of housing by 2025, and setting a path to a more diverse, inclusive and equitable Albuquerque.
The City encourages all to visit the website, learn more and view the report.
