City Councilors Diane Gibson and Brad Winter Working to Provide Funding for Pedestrian Improvements Near Cleveland Middle School

Councilors Gibson and Winter to introduce legislation to provide funding for the construction of pedestrian safety improvements near the school

City Councilors Diane Gibson and Brad Winter have announced that they will co-sponsor legislation to provide funding for the construction of pedestrian safety improvements near the intersection of Louisiana and Natalie NE, in front of Cleveland Middle School.

The bill, which will designate as much as $300,000 for the project, will recommend the installation of a “High-intensity Activated cross Walk” (HAWK) traffic signal or other similar technology-based solution, which will allow pedestrians to stop traffic in both directions for safe crossing.

“We want to ensure that we have no more tragedies such as the one that took the life of young Eliza ‘Justine’ Almuina” said Councilor Gibson “A HAWK signal is available 24/7 and is activated by pedestrians specifically to help them cross busy intersections safely, so I think it’s a good solution here.”

A HAWK traffic signal, when not activated, is blanked out. Once activated by a pedestrian, the signal begins flashing yellow and then solid yellow, advising drivers to prepare to stop, then displays a solid red. The pedestrian is shown a “Walk” signal then a flashing “Don’t Walk” with a countdown indicating the time left to cross. Installation of a HAWK signal also includes signs instructing motorists to “Stop on Red,” and a “Pedestrians” overhead sign, as well as instructions for pedestrians on how to cross the street safely.

“The legislation also asks the City’s Department of Municipal Development and APD to work with Albuquerque Public Schools to identify other similar intersections near schools that are in need of safety improvements.” said Councilor Winter

After introduction, the bill will be referred to the City Council’s Finance & Government Operations Committee for further discussion.  Both Councilor Gibson and Councilor Winter are members of the Finance & Government Operations Committee.
