City Councilor Cynthia D. Borrego Creates Safer Streets for District 5 Children

Neighborhood Street Safety Signs Installed in Galaxia Park Dr. /Del Sol Park Dr. Neighborhood.

July 6, 2020

Today, City Councilor Cynthia D. Borrego joined neighborhood leaders to unveil the newly installed 'Children at Play’ signs in the Galaxia Park Dr. /Del Sol Park Dr. Neighborhood.

Mr. John Baca and his neighbors are raising children in the Galaxia Park Dr. /Del Sol Park Dr. neighborhood.  District 5 residents approached Councilor Borrego, in behalf of the neighborhood, with their concern for young children playing in the streets.  Councilor Borrego drove through the area at different times of day and observed numerous young people playing in the roads--roller skating, skateboarding, bicycling, and shooting hoops.  The neighborhood’s houses are densely built together, and many with smaller back yards causing children to overflow into the roads to play.

Alarmed, Councilor Borrego immediately began working with the City of Albuquerque Department of Municipal Development and requested a cost estimate to place ‘Children at Play’ signage throughout the neighborhood.  At a modest cost of $1680, seven signs were funded and placed at four different locations.

“I Thank Mr. Baca and other neighborhood leaders for bringing this issue to my attention,” said Councilor Borrego. “After seeing the problem for myself, I was more than willing to approve the funding for signage--to protect and preserve these District 5 children’s childhood experiences.”

Mr. John Baca, Galaxia Park Dr. neighborhood resident, continues to advocate for traffic calming measures in the Galaxia Park Dr. /Del Sol Park Dr. area.  He seeks to accommodate the neighborhood’s children, deserving of a safe community.
