Bellamah Avenue Extension (Sawmill)
Update
In response to public input on the design of the project, the City is proposing changes and adjustments to design as shown in this document: PDF Bellamah Revisions
Changes in the plans include:
- The location of the “choke down” where the road narrows has been shifted to the east, just west of the drive pad to the UPS property.
- Where narrowed, the roadway will line up with the south curb line as previously designed/presented to allow for additional landscape and street tree opportunities on the north side of the street all the way to Lumberton.
- “No trucks beyond this point” signs will be installed at the choke down.
- The turning radius at the curve west of Lumberton has been “tightened” for additional traffic calming and to further discourage large vehicles.
- This change in the radius provides additional opportunity for landscaping and street trees on the north side of the street west of Lumberton.
Project Description
The Bellamah Avenue Extension project in the Sawmill neighborhood will extend and improve Bellamah Avenue between the Sawmill Village development and 12th Street to provide a safe, efficient transportation corridor with multi‐modal accessibility, while also improving drainage deficiencies. The project was identified as a need through the public input process associated with the Sawmill/Wells Park Sector Development Plan, which named neighborhood connectivity as a goal for the area. Amendments to the sector plan updated the neighborhood street network recommendations and established design standards for street improvements and new streets in the neighborhood. Connectivity via Bellamah Avenue was ultimately preferred over extending Aspen Avenue in order to avoid potential cut-through traffic in the single-family/low-density residential areas and to promote and urban main street environment in the area of Bellamah Avenue and 18th Street.
You can download the Sawmill/Wells Park Sector Development Plan at https://www.cabq.gov/planning/plans-publications/area-sector-development-plans. Note that the policies from the from Sector Development Plans were incorporated to the Comprehensive Plan when it was updated in 2017, and the regulations from those plans were incorporated into the Integrated Development Ordinance (IDO) in 2017. While the plans themselves were repealed, the contents have been incorporated into our current policies and regulations.
