District 2 Newsletter

September 13, 2019 Newsletter from City Councilor Isaac Benton
September 13, 2019

Hello Neighbors,

Due to circumstances beyond the City's control, Monday's Council meeting has been cancelled and a special meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September 18 at 4:00 pm in Council Chambers, basement level of city hall:  Agenda.

Legislation

R-19-187 Declaration of a Climate Emergency (Benton, Davis, Gibson) will be on the agenda for Wednesday's meeting.  This resolution endorses the declaration of a climate emergency, commits to a city-wide just transition and climate emergency mobilization effort, and calls for regional collaboration and mobilization. In 2008, the City of Albuquerque assembled a task force to develop a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the city by 80 percent by the year 2050. The result was the Climate Action Plan (CAP), which suggests policy goals in the areas of carbon offsets, local food and agriculture, carbon neutral buildings, recycling, renewable energy, social change, livable neighborhoods, and transportation.   Due to a change in Administration and Council, that plan was never adopted or implemented.  R-19-187 calls for utilizing/updating the 2009 Climate Action Plan as a framework for the City's just transition plan.  The resolution also emphasizes the need for a regional just transition and climate emergency mobilization effort in full partnership with residents of Albuquerque, community organizations, allies, Tribal nations, and traditional agricultural communities, keeping the concerns of vulnerable communities central to mobilization efforts.
