Councilor Benton Holds Press Conference on Angel’s Law and Animal Welfare Department Policies
On Sunday, July 12, 2015, Councilor Benton held a press conference to address his concerns with some of the Animal Welfare policies and practices.
Councilor Benton states in his recent press release that he is making two requests of Mayor Berry:
- "First, immediately and administratively increase the insurance requirement for owners of dogs that have been declared dangerous from the current $100,000 to $1.5 million. Under Section 9-17-5(B) (6) of the ordinance, the Mayor has such administrative authority. It is my understanding that this recommendation was made to AWD Director Barbara Bruin in 2011, and it is long overdue."
- "Second, release the report by private investigator Robert Caswell Investigations (RGI), which was initiated as a result of the March 27, 2015 statements by Jim Ludwick and Carolyn Hildalgo to the City’s Inspector General. Although it was referred to the Inspector General, the Administration contracted with RGI to investigate AWD’s adoption practices for potentially dangerous dogs."
