The Water Utility Authority have begun construction on a major project to reduce sewer odors and improve sewer flow on Albuquerque's west side.

The $6.5 million project will include installation of vortex manholes, which help contain sewer gases underground, and the realignment of a major sewer collector line. Construction is expected to last through September 2017.

The Yucca Sewer Interceptor Project will replace sewer lines and services on 58th Street from Avalon Road on the north to Central Avenue on the south, on 59th Street from Central Avenue on the north to Churchill Road on the south, and on Churchill Road from 59th Street to Old Coors Drive. Residents and businesses on 59th Street and Churchill Road south of Central Avenue will also have their water lines and services replaced. The impacted roadways will be repaved from curb to curb, and new fire hydrants will be installed.

AUI of New Mexico is the contractor for the project. Construction will begin on Churchill Road between 59th Street and Old Coors Drive. Access will be provided to local residents and businesses. Westbound and northbound traffic will be detoured to Old Coors Drive, then to Central Avenue, then to 59th Street. Eastbound and southbound traffic will be detoured to 59th Street, then Gonzales Road, then Old Coors Drive.

Regular work hours will be 7:00AM - 5:00PM. Monday- Friday, although the contractor may work longer hours on weekends, if needed. To receive regular construction updates, contact Patti Watson at (505)24-3134 or [email protected]
