About the author: Demetria Martinez is a poet, writer and activist whose most recent novel, The Block Captain's Daughter, about activists in Albuquerque, won an International Latino Book Award and an American Book Award. Her widely translated novel, Mother Tongue, was inspired by Martinez’s 1988 trial for conspiracy against the United States government in connection with allegedly transporting Salvadoran refugees into the country, a charge that with others carried a 25-year prison sentence. Based in Albuquerque, she is active with Los Jardines Institute and the Coalition for Prisoners' Rights.
